in the car to a point further along the bluff when she managed to
escape and leap over the edge of the cliff, Fortunately she landed
in a clump of shrubbery and was not injured. On the night of Jane
19, 1923, he shot W, E, Holt, a l\6-year-old white man, three times
and forced Mrs, Ethel Denecamp, Holt's companion to submit to sexual
relations after which he bhot and killed her also, He beat both
bodies over the head with his gun barrell and then tied Holt's body
to the rear of the car and dragged it some distance, Mitchell was
arrested shortly afterwards and when his home was searched, Holt's
pistolk scabbard and gloves were found as well as a piece of rope
matching that used. to drag his body, Mitchell made and signed a
confession to all of the above murders and he was suspected of having
perpetrated a number of other killings, for one of which a man had
been burned at the stake in 1916, At his trials, he repudiated his
confession but the evidence was so strong that he was convicted of
six murders and received the death penalty in each. Following un-
successful appeals to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, he was
hanged ‘at Waco on July 30, 1923. Prior to his execution , he admitted
his guilt of all of the crimes against him and said that. his original
confession was true in all details, A large canvass had been erected
