"RAyetteville, Tenn., March 2, 1909-In the Lincoln County
jail today at 12:30 o'clock, Frank Gilbreath, colored, was
hanged for the mrder of Ed Pigg, a young farmer residing
in the southern section of this county, Uilbreath requesté¢
that no questions be asked him after being placed on the
scaffold, As the rope was being placed over his head, he
requested to be allowed to pray. He knelt on the scaffold
and asked the Lord to be with him and to take care of his
father and mother, Gilbreath made a confession to Sheriff
Taylor, stating that he fiired the shot that ended the life
of young Pigg. Gilbreath lived 1) minutes after the trap
was sprung. Dr. D, M, Goodner pronounced him dead, The
execution was witnessed by several officers, a few citi-~-
zens, and representatives of the press. The remains were
taken in charge by the negro s father who emered the jail
