Calhoun, a 3l-year-old black man, was convicted of murder in Carroll
Coes Gass and sentenced to the chain gang from which he was subse- _
quently paroled. He then moved to Newnan, Coweta Coz, where he ob-
tained employment as a laborer and married, He and his wife pur-
chased a home situated only three doors from the home of Mr, and
Mrs, vames McGinty, also black, On the afternoon of Nov, 3, 1952 3
while McGinty was away from his house, the Calhouns went there and
Mrs, Calhoun and Mrs, MeGinty got into an argument. Calhountook his
wife's side and struck Mrs, McGinty before they left, ‘Two hours
later, Calhoun returned to the McGinty house, armed with a pistol,
and knocked on the door, MeGinty, who had returned home, opened the
door and when he saw Calhoun began cursing him, Calhoun then shot
and killed him. Calhoun was arrested Shortly afterwards and while he
admitted that he had shot McGinty, he claimed that he only meant to
wound him and had fired in fear when McGinty began cursing and raised
his arms at him. Convicted and Sentenced to die, his case was appeal =
ed to the Georgia Supreme Court which affirmed the lower court and he
was electrocuted at the Georgia State Prison on December 18, 1953.
