"Pittsboro, Walhoun Ge, Misse, 5-16~-1883-Henry Fleming
was hanged in the presence of a great crowd for a mure
der comitted two years agoe The condemned man who was
cool and self-possessed, made no confession. When at th
gallows he attenpted to kill himself with a small pocket
knife and succeeded in inflicting a wound in his throat,
When the drop fell, his neck was broken and his death
struggle lasted but an instant. Fleming was respited
times by the Governor and am strong effort was made to
have his sentence commutedto life imprisonment but the

enormity of his crime called for his executione”
