CEPHAS, Frederick ("Brag")

"Cambridge, Md,, 8-1-188)-Frederick, alias Brag, Cephas,
colored, was hanged at noon today for the murder of Mrs,
Celia Bush Murphy, April 7. At 12:10 pem, Cephas was led
from his cell to the scaffold, passing in view of 300
people, and ascended the scaffold singing "Jesus, Lover of
My Soul," and accompanied by the clergyman. He made a few
remarks, confessing the crime. Prayer being offered, the
black cap was adjusted and he bade goodbye to the attend-
ant and professed a readiness to die, When the sheriff
cut the rope the cap not being securely fastened flew off,

exposing his distorted features. The scene was sickening.
Death resulted in a few minutes from strangulation,"
