Kearney and Tawler, white Cincinnati, Ohio, bandits, went to the

were holding their et eee te in a back room and counting mem-
bership dues on the night of March 5, 1918. They were accompanied
by William "Zeke" Moran and the three men entered through the back
door ,ama@ demanding the money. Without warning, they opened fire,
killing two of the directors, John Rehm and Andrew Nordmeyer. One
of the directors, Covington Puptic Safety Commissioner Thomas Kluem=
per, drew his own revolver and killed Moran, being wounded in the
cheek himself in the fusillade of shots, ‘Kearney and Lawler grabbed
& roll of bills totaling S1100 from the table and FBX fled, %ear-
ney mua was captured a few hours later in Cinc&nnati and Tawler was
saken into custody the next day. Both were convicted and sentenced
to die, but on May 18 they managed to e escape from the Covington Co,
