Bakery &@ young white man, had been employed for some time as a clerk
in the grocery store owned and operated by Neil Nelson at Carrollton,
a suberb of New Orleans, La, Nelson had married another young clerk,
Laura Frank, and they lived in an apartment upstairs over the grocery.
On Saturday night, March 7, 1891, after the store had closed, Nelson
was counting the weekly receipts and he handed Baker &30.00,represent-
ing his monthly pay, over his shoulder, Baker tock the money and
then began beating Nelson over the head with a bag of shot. Mrs, Nel-
Son heard the noise ands. coming down the staris and seeing what was
happening, told Baker not to kill her husband. With Baker's atten-
tion distracted, Nelson fled the store, “hen he returned, he found
his wife's body, her throat cut, at the foot of the stairs and the
money missing. He immediately gave an alarm and when Baker was taken
into custody shortly afterwards, he attempted to commit suicide by
deaping under a moving train, He denied that he had killed Mrs, Nel-
Son and claimed that her husband had done so becauee he was jealous
of an intimate relationship between Baker and his wife. He maintained
this attitude at his trial where he was convicted and sentenced to
