That BMMKXKEX afternoon, when the two young men were returning, they
noticed Turner was on their car alone and they inquired as to the
whereabouts of his wife. He answered that she had returned to the
city some time before but they were not satisfied with his answer and
. returned to the mountain to search for her, In the meantime, KHKH 2
young boys had discovered her body, her throat cut from ear-to-ear,
Turner did not stop in Chattanooga, but fled to Kentucky and several
months later he was located at the home of his brother-in-law in Lee
County, His location was discovered by a former Kentuckian who had,
on three occasions, been tried but not convicted in Chattanooga for
the marder of a black man and who had been commissioned by the Sheriff
to trace Turner, Tried in the September, 1907, term of court, he was
convicted and sentenced to die. , His conviction was affirmed by the
Tennessee Supreme Court and, after receiving one respite, he was
hanged in Chattanooga on February 27, 1908, He went to his death
calmly and the only word he spoke from the gallows was: "Goodbye,"

He requested that his body be returned to Shoulder Blade and interred
nest to those of his parents,

After he had married a 17-year-old Frozen Creek, Kym girl, Lillie
Buchanan, he took his bride to Cartersville, Ga. 9 and they operated
a restaurant there for a short time until she was ordered to leave
the city because of promiscuous behavior, She then went to Atlanta
and he followed a few days hater. While in Atlanta, she had met and
began having an affair with a young resident of that city and when
Turner surprised them together in a hotel room he had them arrested
and they were fined in police court, . Mr, and Mrs, Turner then went
to Chattanooga, Tenn,, arriving there on March 31, 1907, and they
were followed by the Aélanta man and one of his friends, both of whom
subsequently testified that she had asked them to follow, It was

brought out at his trial that one of the nights spent in Chattanooga
was in a hotel room where a traveling salesman shared their quarters
and this led to prosecution charges that Turner was acting as a pro-=

curer for his young wife, On the morning of April 2, 1907, the Tur-
ners, accompanied by the two Atlanta men, rode a trolley to the top
of Lookout Mountain where they separated, Testimony revealed that
Mr, and Mrs, Turner were quarreling constantly on the trolley ride,
