tried, convicted and sentenced to be hanged for attacking a
young white girl in theBayou, Natchez territory near here

2 weeks ago. Owing to theindignation aroused by the crime
and the fear by officials of possibletrouble, the negro was
hurried away to another jail by Sheriff J, W. Payne after
the trial for safekeeping and the date of his execution will
be set later. Only one hour and thirty-five minutes elapse
from theimpaneling of the jury fia the sentencing of the ne-=
gro, whose only testimony was that he had confessed to the

crime. He showed no elvotion except when Judge John F, Ste-
phens sentenced him to 'hang by the neck until dead, dead,
dead.'! Then he drew one hand across his neck as if he al-
ready felt the tightening of the rope. The girl identified
