STEWART, Charles
Stewart, a 30-year-old black man, was employed as a restaurant por-
ter in-Akron, Ohio. During a period of only a few months, he
followed five middle-aged women from an Akron bus in the early even-
ing, waylaid them before they reached home, beat them unconscious,
dragged. them into alleys and brutally raped them. His first victim,
55-year-old Mrs, Celia Senser, died of her wounds as did his last,
51-year-old Mrs, Mabel Baxendale, Following each of the five assault
Stewart was taken into custody on Suspicion and placed in a line-up,
but none of the witnesses who saw him leaving the busés behind the |
victims nor the three victims who survived could positively identify
him and he was released, In addition to raping Mrs. Baxendale and
beating her to death, he also stole her purse which contained some
jewelry and her paycheck from her job’ as a defense worker which she
had received on the dy of her assault, May 18, 1915. The fact that
the purse and its contents was stolen was released to the press and
