James McEvoy was hanged at Aiken, S, C., on Apri 19, 1878
for the murder of Major James J. Gregg at Graniteville on
April 20, 1876, The motive was Gregg's discharging McEvoy
from his position as an errand boy at a factory of which
Gregg was superintendent, Thas had happened ten years
previously when McEvoy was only ll years old and he had
then gone to Texas but returned shortly before the murder,
still harboring a grudge. McEvoy claimed that Gregg had
seduced his sister which Gregg denied. McEvoy received
two respites, NATIONAL POLICE GAZETTE h-27-1878,

Appealed and affirmed to S. C, Supreme Court KOXXKXSXXXXX

on grounds that the 185 grand jury had indicted and that
Hetsevern had expired and ever the admissibility of
