Tyler, a black-bearded mystic, seer and "fortune teller" arrived in
Williams County, Ohio, in 1847. Tyler gained quite a reputation for
being able to reveal the location of lost property and livestock for
which he received liberal fees. In reality, he and his assistant,

a feeble-minded 17-year-old boy. named Daniel Heckerthorn would steal
the livestock and other objects, hide them in a concealed place and
then Tyler would let his mystical powers come into play when the
parties agreed to meet his price. . His biggest effort was when he
persuaded HREEK Heckerthorn to abduct 5~year-old Davida Schamp, the
son of a prosperous West Jefferson settler, from his yard, take him
into the woods and kill him by bashing his head against a tree. When
a posse of local farmers were unable to locate the boy, Tyler was
contacted at his MW&KEXH# Kunkle residence. When David's father
agreed to pay Tyler his fee, Tyler revealed that the boy was dead
but that his body would be, found "near green leaves, under wood and

beside water." Soon afterwa rd the body was found inside_a hollow
