"James L, Travers, a negro, was hanged in jail in washine~
ton yesterday. His crime was the murder of his mistress,
Lena Gross, in November, 1892," CHRONICLE, San Francisco,
CA, July 20, 1895 (2/5.)

Ltr, dtd. 9-20-1989 from Hearn, citing Washinge
ton Evening Star, states, he was native of
Charles Co., Md., age 2. On 11-19~189) he
murdered his mistress, Lena Gross, black. They

argued over money x he knocked her out with a
punch to the face and then cut her throat with a
