"In the 1881 RAY COUNTY, MISSOHRI, HISTORY, pp 70-73,
is an account of the murder of Mrs . Doréas Clevenger,
28 May, 1837, was committed by Ishaand Henry, slaves re=
spectively of Richard Cleavenger (sic) and Abraham Fro-~
mane They were publicly hanged 11 August 1837 by Hardy
Holman, sheriff, as directed by judge and a grand jury.
This was first public execution." Ltr, dtd, April 8,
