"Savannah, Ga., Septe 8, 1810-This day at 1 o'clock was

| efecuted on (7?) Common, pursuant to his sentence, wiltian
| Smith, a free black man, of the crew of the brig Sea Islane
Captain William (7), packet between this place and New
York, Smith was formall y tried and convicted of inveigl-
ing and carrying off from this state, a wench and her
child, belonging to the estate of Mr. Charles (?)., In the
course of the testimony adduced against him at the trial,
it appeared that he had likewise attempted to persuade a
negro fellow belonging to Mess rs. Be and Je Pe McKlune to
run off in like manner. Such crimes are punishable by the
laws of the state with death, whether committed by a white
man or a negro3 and Smith is the first who has been execuw
ted for such an offence, though the losses occasioned by
