White, an 18-year-old white sailor, and a 2h-year-old former convict,
John Hildebrandt, entered Conway's Saloon in the southern part of
Seattle, Wash.s, one night in September, 190), with draw pistols and
ordered "Hands up." When some of the patrons were slow in responding,
White became nervous and began firing, One elderly man, Matthew
Murphy,was killed, Both White and Hildebrandt were charged with mur-
der and White was tried first, convicted and sentenced to hang, When
Hildebrandt's case came up for trial, he was seriously ill with rheu-
matie fever and he was convicted of second-degree murder and given a
life sentence, White expressed satisfaction with the verdict of
death, saying that it was probably better both for him and the State,
but he did express sympathy for the judge who had tears in his eyes
when he pronounced the death sentence, His conviction was appealed
to the Washington Supreme Court which affirmed it and he was hanged
at the Washington State Prison on March 2, 1906,
