PAVEY, Ira Vernie

Pavey, 4 white man born in St. louis, Mo., in 1891, began his crimi-
nal career when 15-vears-old when he was sentenced to a Missouri
reformatory for incorrigibility, Subsequently he served prison
sentences both in the Missouri penitentiary and at Port Leavenvorhkh
for such varied offenses as grand tae assault ie intent to
kill and desertion fran the army. Ons one occasiong he managed to
escape from XSK¥SKUOERERX Leavenworth | by dropping from a wall and
fracturing both feet. Nonetheless, he travied 15 miles on foot be-
fore being captured. After his release from Leavenwerhh, he moved
to Lowa where he beaame affiliated with a gang engaged in running
illicit whiskey. In March, 1919, while a attempting to hijack a load
of whiskey being brought in from Canada by Claude Litner near
kins, Lowa, Pavey shot and killed B¢¥dG He took the whiskey into
Pouth Dakota where he sold it w ith”many of the tases stained by
Litner's blood. Convicted and sentenced to hangs Pavey accepted his
fate stoically and he was hanged at the Iowa State Prison on Sept.
