Kindred, a 22-year-old white man, lived near Mercer, Mercer Cos, Moe
He had donesome credit business with the store owned by Andrew and
Joseph Alley in Mercer and was behind in his account. On Feb, 5,
1898, he went to Lineville on the train and, while there, purchased
some whiskey that he consumed as he was returning to Mercer, When
he reached the Alley brother's store, he went inbide and went to the
office where Andrew Alley was working on the books, He said that he
wanted to purchase an axe handle and when Alley refused to let him
have it until he paid his old account, Kindred offered to fight him,
Alley replied that he did not settle his accounts that way and then
he and Joseph both ordered Kindred from the store, As Kindred walked
towards the front of the building, stepping backwards, the brothers
followed at some distance, Without warning, Kindred drew a revolver
and shot both of them, Though wounded, Joseph Alley returned to the
SffLice and obtained his pistol but collapsed before he could pursue
Kindred, There were several witnesses in the store and medical
assistance was summoned for the brothers and the police notified to
