LEUTH, Otto

the United States as a child. The family lived at 12 Merchant Sues
Cleveland, Ohio. On May 9, 1889, Maggie Thompson, the 7=year-old
daughter of a neighbor asked him if she could borrow some buttons,
His parents were away from home and he asked her inside, took her
upstairs to his room and bludgeoned her to death witha hammer be-
fore raping her, He left the body on his bed, covered with bed
linen for a week and then took her downstairs and buried her behind
a partition in the celler, Searching parties were formed to look
for the little girl and Otto paayed a prominent part in the search,
On June 9, a lady who shared the house with the Lueths notified po-
lice of the odor emanating from the cellar and the body was dis-
covered, The woman also told them of some bed linen that Otto had
taken to the smoke house that was covered with blood and filled with
maggots and this was recovered. The entire Leuth family was taken —
to the police headquarters and questioned. When Otto was shown the
bed linen, he claimed that he had gotten sick amt from drinking beer
and thrown up on it, an excuse that he had previously given to his
mother who had accepted it. Finally he confessed and at his trial
he was convicted and sentenced to die, his youth notwithstanding.
