PREWITT, Grandville ("Grand")
Prewitt, a young white man, lived in Wayne Co., Ky. In 1886, a far-~
mer named Garvis Buck who Lived in the eastern part of the county
sold a horse for $30, receiving cash in payment. Prewitt knew of
the sale and that night he went to the Buck home while intoxicated
and, while Buck was on his knees building a fire in the fireplace,
Prewitt bludgeoned him to death with a stick of wood, He then killed
Buck's sister, Mary Ellen, in the same manner and was going to kill
her 6-year-old son when the family's dog attacked him which gave the
boy an opportunity to flee, Prewitt followed him into the night,
but bhe boy hid in a briar patch and he was unable fo find him. ‘then
it was safe to leave his hiding place, the boy reported the murders
and named Prewitt as the killer, He was promptly arrested, convicted
and sentenced to hang, Around 11,000 persons gathered in Monticello
on January 13, 1887, to witness the execution though it was carried
out behind an entlosure and only 60 official witnesses were allowed
inside, Tickets for this sold for as highk as $5,00 each, He made
a speech from the gallows in which he blamed whiskey for his predica-
ment. The little boy was on the scaffold and Prewitt begged his for-
giveness and asked him to shake his hand but the boy refused.
