FORD, Samuel and LYONS, Samuel 9/2/1778
Ford and Lyons were Lieutenants in the Colonial Forces during the
Revolutionary War with Lyons serving on the Dickinson galley and Ford
on the Effingham. During the attack on Fort Miffling in November,
1777, they, together with John Wilson and John Lawrence, deserted to
the British, going off in boats. They were taken to Philadelphia
WHEXE where Ford “went about the city selling liqubr." When the
British evacuated the city, he accompanied the British Army to Mon~
mouth but deserted it during the battle and returned to the American
campe All four were tried by Court Martial and sentenced to death
with Ford, Lyons and Wilson to be shot and Lawrence to be hangede
All four were conducted to the place of execution tn Philadelphia on
