BERTCHEY, Adolph
Bertchey, a l9-year~old white many was an educated burglar who Spent
his life devising ingenious methods of breaking and entering, ‘ He
was always armed with two revolvers which he wore on either end of
a Tope hung around his necke On Dec, 12, 1889, he was sentenced to
prison in Connecticut and served 18 years before being released in
1906 at which time he moved to New York. He was arrested there
in April, 1906, and sentenced to two years for carrying concealed
weapons, After his release, he moved to Nutlev near Lakewood, N. Js,
where he posed as a businessman while in reality he was practicing
his profession as burglar. He escaped detection until January, 1909,
when he was caught burglarizing a hotel in Lakewood. A large crowd
took up the chase and he was finally overtaken by @ man named Frank
FERXEBHEX Jankowski who knocked him to the ground, Sertchey drew
one of his pistols and shot Jankowski, inflicting a fatal wound,
Convicted and sentenced to die, he was a model prisoner and showed
very little emotion. He walked to his death in the electric chair
wearing a white rose one sobee° He was executed at the New Jersey
State Prison on August a ® :
