EDWARDS, Alexander
Edwards, a 33-year-old black native of North Carolina, was employed.
on @ farm near Bingham, Marlbore Co., S.C. On Dec. 22, 1893, he
w orked all day and late that afternoon he and another black man
fren North Carolina left by foot to walk home for Christmas. They
traveled practically all night and early on the morning of Dec, 23,
they stopped near Clie to rest. The men built a fire and as Burnett
sat there warming himself, Edwards slipped up behind him and hit him
twice over the head with an axe. He then robbed his friend of a pis-
tol and some money that he was carrying. After Edwards had left,
Burnett regained consciousness and crawled off into some woods to
hide in case Edwards should return, He was found several days later
and lived long enough to accuse Edwards of his murder, Edwards vee
hemently protested his imocence during his SEXXXSA trial and impri-
soment awaiting execution until April 16, 1893, when he professed
religion and made a full confession, He was hanged in the Marlboro
County Jail at Bennettsville, S. C., on April 20, RBRRK 189).
