Benevidez, a Mexican ranch hand, was employed as a helper on the
Schleicher Coe, lex.,; ranch owned by a 69-year-old widow, “mma
Calcote, and run by her youngest son, Henry Calcote. The Calcotes
liked Benevidez and treated him as a member of the family, allowing
him to live in their house and eat at the same table with the other
members of the family. However, in spite of the kindness shown to
him, Benevidez fell in love with Henry's wife, Dardenella, and some-
how persuaded himself that she wuld gladly leave with him if only
her husband. and mother-in-law were dead. On the night of Sept. 5;
191, while the family was eating slices of watermelon and planning

a shopping trip to San Angelo, Benevidez shot and killed Mrs, Calcote
and Henry. He forced Dardenalla and her infant daughter, Patsy Irene,
to accompany him in the Calcote pickup truck. When he stopped to open
a gate, Dardenella attempted to flee with her baby and he shot and
cilled them also. Benevidez then went to a neighboring rancher and
obtained employment with him. After the bodies were discovered by
another son of Mrs, ima Valcote, he attampted to flee to Mexico

but was capbured just be fore he crossed the border. Convicted and
sentenced to death, his case was appealed to the U. %, Supreme Court
before he was finally electrocuted on Aug. 6, wole.
