CHOW YEW

"The first and only legal infliction of the
death penalty in Mono County (CA) was the
hanging of Chow Yew at Bridgeport on December
12, 1878. Chow Yew had murdered another
Chinaman at Benton; Yew was so weak from fright
that he had to be assisted to the gallows by
Sheriff Taylor and his deputy. As usual in
California history, the Chinese was the scape-~

goat for the fears and crimes of whites."
Waldertz, Frank S., MONO DIGGINGS; Bishop, CA:

Chalfant Press, 1978, page 123.
