VAN ATTA, James

van Atta, a 30-year-old white farmer, lived at Alexandria, Hunterdon
Coes Ne Je He had long maintained a personal enmity with another
farmer named YXMKEXEXSIR John Fields, One morning in April, 179),
Fields left the home that he shared with his sister to go to work

for another neighbor but he did not arrive at his job. A search was
instituted and the mill dam at Frenchtown was dragged, but the body
was not located. Finally, one of the searchers found a newly covered
grave in the woods near where Van Atta lived and when it was uncovered
it ylelded the body of Fields who had been Shot through the head,
Secause of the known enmity between the two men, a warrant was issued
for Van Atta's arrest and he confessed to the murder. Convicted and
sentenced to die, he was hanged in the Upper part of Flemington on
July » 179k.
