minutes after Seth Jefferson, a negro was placed on

trial here today charged with the murderof Mr, and Mrs,
Samuel Chandler, of Calvin, La., an aged couple, he had
been found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging, and
was enroute to Alexandria under escort of a company of
militia. A mob of three hundred men was reported to be
waiting outside the town to lynch the negro, Jefferson
confessed the crime, He was arrested in Texas and
