ZORN, Fred

Zorn, a white farmer who lived with his wife, bee children by a pre-
vious marriage and her mother in Umatilla G,, Ores, about three
miles from Walla Walla, Washes, was a chronic alcoholic who had sold
his interest in the farm to his wife, They quarreled frequently
about this and other money matters and in September, 1891, he went

to Walla Walla where he remained drunk for two weeks, returning home
early on the morning of Oct. |}, He had both breakfast and lunbh with
the family and late that afternoondecided that he would go back to
town. Mrs. Zorn locked him in his bedroom and he proceeded to braak
the door down and shoot her in the breast and, as she ran outside,

he shot her again in the back, He also shot her aged mother through
the shoulder and then returned to his room, undressed and went to
bed. Her son went for the Sheriff and a doctor and while he was gone
Zorn shot himself through the mouth in an unsuccessful suicide attempt
At his trial, his defense was based on insanity with his attorneys
claiming that he was suffering from delirium tremens at the time of

the murder, but the doctor who examined his wound, the Sheriff and
others stated that while he had been drink he was not intoxicated
and that he was not suffering from delirium tremens and he ae con-

victed and sentenced to die, The case was appealed to the Vregon
