Krathofski, a 29-year-old native of Poland, suppesedly emigrated to
the United States and settled in Springfield, Mass., after he became
involved in some "heinous crime" in his native country. He married

a Widow and they, along with four other peopleincluding her 16-year-~
old daughter, xm Victoria Pinkos, lived in a 2% two-room basement
apartment located at 73 Sharon St, Krathofski, described asz "a loaf-
er and drunkard" was unemployed and one of the main sources of support
for the familyx was Victoria who was employed a& a box factory, At
home, she had to contend with the unwelcome Sexual attentions of her
Stepfather, On the morning of January 17, 1897, in a jealous frenzy,
he shot the girl awice as she lay in bed, killing her instantly. He
then turned the weapon on himself and fired one bullet into his own
head which entered through the ear, He was not killed and, bleeding
profusely, went out into the streets and ran several blocks before he
was apprehended, He was taken to a Springfield hospital where he was
in a critical condition for several weeks but he finally recovered and
was tried, convicted and sentenced to die. His stay in jail was a
lonely one as he had no visitors other than the chaplain and*his
attorneys, His wife, the mother of his victim, was unable to see him
