White, a middle-aged white man, and his wife, Sadie Hinkson White,
had been married for 3 years. During much of this time, he farmed
at various places in Pennsylvania and generally bore a bad reputa-
tion for honesty and for his treatment of his wife and daughters.
Around 1918, they moved to New Castle, Lawrence Co,, where they rent-
ed an apartment orf Neshannock Avee In 1919, White became infatuated
with a 33-year-old woman and after a year's courtship, they went to
Pittsubrugh and were married on Dec, 22, 1920, On Dec. 23, late in
the afternoon, he was seen leaving the house wifhe Sadie and she was
never seen alive again, When inouiries were made, he explainéd that
she had been committed to a State Hospital at Warren, The Sheriff,
learning of his second marriage, checked with the hospital and found
that Mrs, White was not there and White was arrested on charges of
bigamy and adultery. He then maintained that Sadie had gone to Chi-
cago where she planned to remain for at least one year but no trace
could be found of her there and a reward was offered and searches
began in the vicinity of New Castle, On Feb, 17, 1921, her body,
pludeeoned and strangled to death, was found in the loft of a barn
at white rented and used for storage and to keep his horses, He
was promptly charged with the murder and, because of the intensity
of the local feeling was taken to Yeaver County for safekeeping. He
