of the jurors had been bribed, At their second trial, all were con=
victed and Patrick Ford and John Murphy were sentenced to die and Judg
Ford, Caulfield and Buckley were sentenced to 20 years imprisonment,
After the Supreme Court of Louisiana had affirmed theconvictions on
appeal, a great effort was made to have the two death sentences commu-
ted to life imprisonment on the grounds that Patrick Ford and Murphy
were receiving unequal punishment in that Judge Ford was the instiga-
tor of the crime, On the night before the execution, both took pow=
dered belladonna and were near death when discovered thenext morning,
Physicians labored over them and kept them alive until the time sche-
duled for their execution when they were taken to the gallows seated
in chairs, After thexx nooses had been place about their next, they
were supported until the trap fell and they went to their deaths in a
comatose condition, They were privately hanged in the Parish Prison
at New Yrleans on March 12, 1886

natives of Ireland who migrated to the United States with their pa~
rents when small children and settled in New Lrleans, La, Patrick
Ford became a salesman for a boot and shoe wholesaler while Thomas
