WATKINS, Charles

Watkins, a young mulatto, was the head waiter at the Hotel Felix in
Roanoke, Va., when he met and fell in love with Miss Ida Frierbel, a
white girl who was stopping at the hotel, When she agreed to meet
him at his uncle's home three miles east of Salem, Va., he left his
job and his wife, Susan, and went there. Miss Frierbel arrived ana
they lived together as man and wife until Susan Watkins discovered
thekr whereabouts andwent there also. Watkins shot his wife in the
hand and then forced her to accompany him into the woods where he
bludgeoned her to death with a rail. He confessed the crime, was
convicted and sentenced to hang. At his execution, he claimed to be
a true son of Christ, but was so dazed that he was unable to talk
connectedly, He was hanged at Salem, Va., on Jan, 8, 1892, His neck
was broken by the fall and he was killed instantly. Only the jury and
newspaper reporters were allowed to witness the exécution,
