Gillick, a. MMHHAR white Dubuque, Iowa, tailor, was in the habit of
abusing his wife when he became intoxicated. On the morning of
March.30, 1858, Mrs. Gillick went to a s&loon where he was drinking
and asked him to return to their home on “ifth Aveme between Main
and Iowa Streéts with her. Gillick replied that he would go home
when he was ready to do so and she left alone, Shortly afterwards
he also left and when he arrived at home they began arguing over
his drinking habits, He drew a pistol and fatally shot her. Con-
victed following a trial that lasted five days and sentenced to
dea th, Gillick's execution was delayed while his case was appealed
to the Iowa Supreme Court. The court upheld the conviction and
sentence and he was hanged in Dubuque on April 27, 1860. A large
crowd gathered and witnesséd the execution at which Gillick refused
to make any statement other than kneeling in prayer, His neck was
broken and he died instantly.
