_ Mensberger, a resident of Carbonville, I11., fell in love
with his wife's sister when she came to live with them.
On the night of Ang. 9, 1981, he took his wife, Helen,
out on a boat from their nearby lake cottage and struck
her over the head, rendering her unconscious. He then
theew her overboard and let her drown. Mensberger was
