"In 1742 the Supreme Court tried two indictments for
'felony' which haddbeen removed by certiorari from the
Court of Oyer and Terminer for Somerset County, Both
defendants were convicted, but while Daniel Williamson,
alias Fagan, a housbreaker and horsethief, was apparent-
ly allowed to hang, a pardon saved the neck of John
Smith, Williamson (or Williams), an lrishman, had
robbed the house of Thomas Stevenson,of Rocky Hill,
