murdered his wife who was 60 years old, at
Columbia, SC, a few days ago by striking her
on the head with a hatchet as she was stooping
to light her pipe. The murderer had lived a
long time with his wife and there is no cause
assigned for the fatal deed. After knocking
his victim down, heleft her struggling in death
hastened to his master, confessed his crime and
then escaped. He was subsequently arrested,
tried, convicted, and sentenced to be hung on
