JONES, Adam and THOMPSON,
Jones (an assumed name), a middle-aged Englishman, and Thompson (name
also assumed), met in St, Louis, Missouri, Both were criminals and
they joined forces with Jones, described as "brilliant" as the leader,
They went to Louisville, Ky., where they decided to rob William S,
Thomas, a wealthy broker and money dealer who had his offices in his
home. They observed the house for several days before the obtained
entry and struck Thomas over the head, inflicting a mortal wound ,
when he resisted their robbery. They were in the process of ransacking
the house when a servant noticed them and gave the alarm. Taken into
custody, they were tried, convicted and sentenced to die. Prior to
their execution, Jones made a confession of his past activities which
read like a fairy tale and probably was, He said that when he left
England for the first time, he left 50,000 pounds (around $250,000)
in the hands of a banker without the knowledge of his creditors, When
he returned, the banker disclaimed any knowledge of the deposit and
jones killed him. He then went to Sea where he incited the crew of
the ship on which he was sailing to mtiny and killed all on board who
refused to join him except the Cactain's wife with whom he lived for
Several months before killing her also. On one occasion, he said that
he was running three hundred slaves from Africa to the United States
