Ileland, a car theif, was 15 years old when he raped his _
first woman. During World War II, he terrorized the fe-
/male population of Portland, Oregon, with a series of
_rapes. Apprehended, he was examined in a mental hospital
for 60 days and put in a Reformatory. He was in and out
-of ja il and prison for car theft, forgery and bad checks
and was released the last time on July 30, 1919. On Aug.
5th, he forced at knife point 15-year-old Thelma Taylor
into a stolen automobile and drove her into a wooded area
where he had been camping since his release. He held her
prisoner for several hours, subjecting her to repeated
rapes and beatings. When the girl attempted escape, he
bludgeoned her to death with a tire iron. Captured in the
Sdolen car, he voluntarily conffesed to het murder, He was
