William Smith, black, alias "Hot Bill", was hanged at |
Gretna, La,, on Feb. 19, 1892, Smith committed a most
brutal murder, his victim being an old white man named
Dominic Commerio, and the difficulty having to do with
nothing more than a little tobacco, The murder was
quite unprovoked, After the commission of the crime,
which happened in February of 1888, Smith escaped and
remained at large until some time last year when he was
captured. The trial took place at the December term of
the District Court before Judge Ross and a jury and no
extenuating circumstamces being shown, a verdict of guilty
of murder was returned,"
