GRAYOR, Robert Dee, 10, 1886
"St, Louis, Mo., 12-10-1886-Robert Grayor, colored, was
hanged in the yard of the jail at 6:55 this morning, He re
tired’at 9 o'clock last night and slept until 5 this morn-
ing, when he was aroused by a deputy sheriff, and partook
of a hearty breakfast. At 6 o'clock the death warrant
was read to him in his cell, and at 6:30 he was taken to
the scaffold in the jail yard, accompanied by two deputies
and followed by a crowd of about 150 who had been admitted
to thejail on tickebs issued by the sheriff, The crime
for which Grayor paid the penalty was the murder of Berry
Evans, also colored, committed July 6, 1883, The night
previous Evans had severely punished Grayor, who was his
roommate and fellow employee in a livery stable, The next
morning Evans taunted Grayor with his discomfiture of the
night before, and Grayor, seizing a wagon spoke, dealt
Evans a blow on the head, from which he died four days la-
