WASHINGTON, Daniel July 9, 1880
"Charleston, S. C., July 9, 1880 - Daniel Washington, alias
Carter, the notorious negro desperado and leader of a
gang of outlaws and horse-thieves who infested this and
adjoining counties for several years, was hanged at 11:30
today for the murder of Allen Collins, colored, the wit-
ness who had been summoned to testify against him in a
horse-stealing case. The murder was committed September
1L, 1877, but Washington was not captured till the early
part of 1879, He was convicted and sentenced to death, but
appealed, and the appeal being decided unfavorable, he was
hanzed today, The execution was conducted in private and

death was immediate. In his last moments, he was attended
by two Catholic clergymen," HERALD, Dallas, Texas, July
