Metelski, a 20-year-old white native of Seberling, Mich., was living
at 50 Seneaa Ste, Buffalo, N, Y., when, on the night of July 31,
1930, he was surprised By) night watchman Edward Feist while trying
to pry open the safe at the Library Garage, Feist grappled with him
and, while they were struggling, Metelski drew a pistol and shot and
killed Feist. After he opened the safe and rifled it and the cash
register of the contents, Metelski fled back to Michigan, Feist's
body was discovered the next morning and the only clue was a finger-
print found on an electric light bulb, Three weeks later, Metelski
was arrested in Detroit for petty burglary and when his fingerprints
were found to match those that had been found on the bulb, he was
charged with the Feist murder and returned to New York, After his
arrival in Buffalo, he confessed the mrder but he subsequently
repudiated the confession and maintained until his death that he was
innocent. Metelski's attitude in the death house was one of total
indifference and, on the afternoon of his death, he insisted on
taking a nap. He was electrocuted at Sing Sing Prison on July 23,
