and killed plain clothes policeman Martin Corcoran on
June 6, 1917 at corner of Broadway and Waveland fve, Had
earlier burglarized house and was carrying suitcase and
basket containing stolen clothes. Was with companion,.
Coreoran stopped and endeavored to lift lid on basket,
Companion fled and Johnson shot Corcoran in groing. Cor-
coran pursued and Johson continued shooting, Corcoran
fired one time and struck Johnson in arm, Johnson ran
into alley and hid behind telephone post after dropping
