sentence caused quite a stir in the area as politics was
running high and objection to English Law and rule was
gaining momentum. The patriots threatened to riot and
declared that whosoever should enforce 'such an obnoxious
decree would be killed on Sight." The sheriff blaked in
the performance of his duties and for one pint of rum
hired an American Indian to be substitute for him. The
dangling noose was tied around Cook's neck in a clearing
