Williams, alias Henry Fitch, alias "Black Spot", was a black native
of Nelson County, Vae He left home in 1891 and’ roamed around the
coal. fields in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, working as a miner,
On Sept. 27, 1903, he was iorking in the mines at DuBois, Clear-
field Cos, Pas, and living in the house of a black prostitute there,
Williams and another black man decided to go to Cleveland, Ohio, and
he sent his bag by railway wxpress to that city. He and his com-
panion were broke and when they’ saw an Italian wamed Ralph William-
son in the railroad zosm yard, they decided to rob’ him, Williams
drew a pistol and his companion attempted to search their victim's
pockets. Williamson resisted and when he drew a knife with which
he sought to defend himself, Williams shot him twice and killed

him. Williams and his companion split up and fled with Williams
traveling forty miles over the mouhtains to Driftwood where he was
Subsequently captured. His friend was never taken and Williams
alone was tried, convicted and sentenced to die. His case was
appealed to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and after ht had affirmed
the lower court, Williams made a full confession in which he said
that he had also killed a black man at Red Star, Vas, but had been
released for lack of evidence after spending 21 days in jail. He
