SO presented a note payable to him and purportedly signed by David
Wood in the amount of $2650. David's execu tors declared the note
to be a forgery and. refused to honorxyit. The man who had rented the
“avid Wood house found some business papers left by Isaac Wood and

a package of arsenic was found in the same‘ container, An autopsy was
ordered that disclosed that XRAREXWBSA TAKAXKXBXUAREXARXUBIN David
Wood and his wife as well as Isaac Wood's wife had all died of arse-
nic poisoning and he was indicted by the Livingston Co, grand jury.
When the officers went to Rantoul to arrest him, they told him that
he was wanted on forgery charges in connection with the note that he
had presented and he waived extradition. He was not informed of the
murder charges until after he had crossed the State line, He was
ably defended at his trial but the circumstantial evidence against
him was overwhelming, The first jury that heard his case failed to
reach a verdict though their vote was elght-to-four for conviction
but he was convicted by the second jury and sentenced to die. Wood
never admitted his guilt and made a Statement from the gallows in
which he reaffirmed his innocence, He was hanged at Geneseo on July

9, 1858, before a large crowd of people, about half of whom were
womens

Wood, a white man born at New Providence, N. Js, on August 10, 1621,

married Sally Doty

were in New Providence visiting relatives, David Wood died after a
