- Howard, a-young Rochester, N.H., man was strongly addicte
to drinking and the living of a dissolute life. On Septe
19, 1843, drunk as a result of a prolonged drinking spree,
he decided to move to New Orlenas but needed money. He
went to the residence of Phoebe Hanson and when she came
to the door, he shtt and killed her witha a view to
robbery. Captured, he attempted to hang himself with a
handkercheif in jail but was revived. The Hanson's were
Quakers and they and a mumber of others of their sect
signed petitions opposing Howard's execution, but he was __
hanged at Dover on July 18, 196, after making a full con-

fession of his crime.
