Morrison, a 37-year-old black resident of Robeson ‘Co., Ne Cyy had

a long and varied criminal career dating back to 1898 when he en-
tered a plea of nolo contendere to a charge of assault and judgement
was suspended on the payment of costs, Later that year he was

found guilty of assault with intent to commit rape and received a
five year sentence, After his re leaseXXHEXWAEXKEKKAKERA in 1903,

he was convicted of Housebreaking tin November of that year and once
again judgement was suspended on payment of costs, In July, 1905,
he NAEXESHKEXERE pleaded guilty to larceny and was sentenced to 12
months working on the roads but he escaped before he could be carried
to the chain gang, Captured shortly afterwards, he was taken to the
gang but managed to escape three days later, Sub sequently recaptured
he served his time and was discharged on May 275 1909, While walk-
ing home after his release, he met Polly Rodgers, described as "a
Croatan woman" who was walking with her baby in her arms, Morrison
told her that a man resembling her husband lay dying in the woods
