"Salem, Va., Nove 26, 1880-the execution of Marcus de La-

fayette Hawley, A oaeeed last month in the Circuit court
of his county for the murder of Zachariah Hayes in June
of last year, took place here today. Both the murderer
and the victim were white men, The execution was con-
ducted privately, the only person present being the
officers of the court, a small guard, a minister of the
Gospel, and representatives of the press. Ihe weather
was exceedingly disagreeable, cold rain, with snow and
sleet prevailing, the latter falling steadily during
