been hanged for murder at 6 o’clock yesterday evening , was granted a reprieve of 30
days by Governor Hobby. The telegram granting the reprieve reached the sheriff of
Wharton County but a short time before the death penalty was to be imposed.”

Williams was sentenced to die for the murder of Evaline Anderson, a negro woman,

(1) Houston Sharp, black, given the death penalty in Houston, TX, for murder of
Policeman John Cain 5 years before, according to News, Galveston, TX,
9/9/1916 (3/1). ' .
(2) Houston Wagner, black, convicted of the murder of Miss Zaola Cramer on
3/26/1916, at Dallas, TX and assessed death penalty. A trained nurse, her
body was found on the campus of a local school on the morning of March 27,
Nearby lay her suitcase with the contents scattered about on the ground.
Wagner was traced through a cheap scarf pin found in her hair. He was
arrested in Oklahoma, confessed to the crime and returned to Dallas.
Before the trial he admitted the crime, giving robbery as the motive.

household furniture, but a few of the officers had an oppor-
tunity of partaking, with his family, of an elegant breakfast,
which had been prepared for them. Here again, we understand
that the general appeared most grateful to Col. HUGHES and the
officers, for their kindness to him, and begged him to accept
: his grateful acknowledgement of their courtesy.
. 4 Whilst at Encero, the general has been guarded by two companies
4 of infantry under the command of Capt. ?DEGGES, D. C. and Md.
Regt. We learn that Santa ANNA will leave immediately for
Jamaica, embarking from the port of Antigus, to which place
the governor has tendered him the escort of Capt. TILGHMAN's
company.
Santa ANNA is accompanied by his lady, a woman of exceeding
beauty and fascinating manners. Her presence will do much
towards smothering the cares of the (self-exiled soldier).
The general left on Friday morning for Autigua, escorted by
Capt. TILGHMAN's company where a brigantine is waiting to carry |
him to Jamaica. We believe he intends visiting England."

~ gon County says "Our District Court is in session, Hon. B. H.
MARTIN, presiding--a good Judge, and will be very popular.""
"CONVICTED--The re-trial of the Slave NELSON, for the murder of
LUCKEY, took place at the court house on Thursday, a special
term, being held for the purpose.--He was found guilty as before,
and on Friday morning, was sentenced to be hanged on Friday next.
This negro was first tried at the Fall term 1846. An appeal
was taken by his counsel to the Supreme Court, and upon examina-
tion of the record it was found to be imprefect, there being
no statement that the Jury had been sworn, though they really
were sworn. The case was sent back for a new trail which has
resulted as we have stated. | There is no doubt the accused
was guilty of astrocious, premediated murder.
As proof of the law aluding character of our population, is
the case of this negro. Upon a mere quibble, he has been
kept for a year and a half at a serious expense to the county,
and has had the benefit of all the legal courtesy and formal- oe |
ity Which would have been extended to any one, and this too,
by a county seriously embarrassed in its county finances, and
not a doubt upon any one's mind of his guilt. It is to be
presumed that at the appointed time he will expiate--his guilt
upon the seatfold, a warning to all offenders, of the correct-
ness and certainty of the administration of the laws in this
community."
